White House Promotes Transphobic Activist Walt Heyer

Anti-transgender activist Walt Heyer, who transitioned twice, is being heralded by the White House.

Walt Heyer, who had two gender reassignment surgeries, one to transition into a woman, the other to transition back to male, is an outspoken opponent of transgender rights.

Each day the White House releases a collection of news stories and articles. Titled West Wing Reads, the daily newsletter shares the “best stories the West Wing is reading” with its subscribers.

‘I Was Once Transgender. Why I Think Trump Made the Right Decision for the Military’ was the title for an article promoted by West Wing Reads this week. The newsletter was released the same week Trump announced a ban on transgender soldiers in the military.

The article was originally published on the right-wing site The Daily Signal, and was authored by Walt Heyer. Heyer was born a man. At the age of 42 he underwent gender reassignment surgery. After eight years of living as a woman, under the name of Laura Jensen, he reversed his surgery. Identifying as male ever since, Heyer has become a sort of anti-transgender activist.

Describing his initial gender reassignment surgery as a “tremendous, destructive process,” Heyer has devoted much of his later years to speaking out against transgenderism.

In the article, Heyer discusses the reason he regrets his transition, and why he believes Trump was right to ban transgender individuals from the military.

“Gender dysphoria, the common diagnosis for one who feels at odds with his or her birth gender, develops from prolonged anxiety and depression. People are not born that way.

“The “proof” for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria is having strongly held feelings—but feelings can and often do change over time.

“The military is expected to prepare its members in warfare: to kill, destroy, and break our enemies. The most important factors in preparing a strong military are not hormone therapy, surgical sex changes, or politically correct education.

“We need psychologically fit, emotionally sound, highly trained troops to protect our nation from its enemies.”

Heyer goes on to discuss why he believes the military shouldn’t pay for trans-related medical expenses.

“On Wednesday, President Donald Trump tweeted that he wouldn’t allow transgender individuals to serve in the military.

“I think he made the right decision—and as someone who lived as trans-female for several years, I should know.

“When I discovered Congress voted earlier this month to not block funding for transgender-related hormone therapies and sex change surgeries, I wondered if it considered how devastating this will be to the fitness, readiness, and morale of our combat-ready troops.

“In July, the House of Representatives voted down Missouri Republican Rep. Vicky Hartzler’s amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which would have banned the military from funding such treatments.

“Paying for transition-related surgeries for military service members and their families is beyond comprehensible.”

Described as a “conman pushing pseudo-scientific BS,” many weren’t impressed by Heyer’s ideas or the White House’s decision to promote his article.

Although we find Walt Heyer’s ideas ludicrous, we aren’t surprised that the White House, which continually attacks the LGBT community, has decided to give credence to his argument.
