Colton Haynes came out as gay last year. Since coming out, the young actor has faced many challenges, both professional and personal. In a recent string of tweets, Haynes hits back at Hollywood for not treating gay actors fairly.

“Hollywood is so fucked up,” Haynes began while addressing the homophobia he believes exists in the television and film industries.

“So much of the focus is on your personal life & has nothing to do with the talent you have to bring to the table,” he continues. “Thank god for Ryan Murphy, Greg Berlanti, & Jeff Davis. They believe gay actors are more than just their personal lives.”

Haynes specifically mentioned Jeff Davis, producer and showrunner of ‘Teen Wolf’. Davis recently brought Haynes back to the series, this time portraying a gay character.

We’re excited to see Hayne’s character Jackson has finally come out of the closet and embraced his true self, but that doesn’t mean we believe the actor is only capable of playing gay roles.

Colton is right. Too often Hollywood “type casts” actors, specifically gay actors. While we enjoy gay actors portraying gay characters, they are more than capable of playing straight characters as well.

We loved Colton in ‘Arrow’. We also enjoyed his performance in the recently released comedy film ‘Rough Night’. Both of those roles portrayed straight characters, as have many more of his performances.

As with all things in life, equality takes time. Hollywood in general has certainly come a long way. But to completely end discrimination, people have to speak out. We were happy to see Colton do just that.
