A Song of Water and Fire: Tom Daley and KJ Apa

Olympic diver Tom Daley brings the water, and actor KJ Apa brings the fire to our story.

Game of Thrones returned last week on HBO. Even though we might have to wait to see how A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series that gave birth to the show we all know and love, unfolds; we found another way to quench our thirst.

In our opinion, there can only be two participants for ‘A Song of Water and Fire’: Tom Daley and KJ Apa. These young men are very different in a variety of ways, but they have one thing in common: We just can’t seem to look away.

So let’s sit back and grab a drink, it’s about to get hot.

Being an Olympic Medal-Winning diver, Tom Daley brings the water to our equation. At the age of 18, Tom not only won Bronze for Team Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, but gained the world’s attention for another reason. If you’re like us, you enjoy diving competitions, not only for the amazing displays of athletic ability, but for all that tiny swimwear. But few look as good as Tom Daley does in a speedo.

Be in the moment. 🇬🇧

Following the 2012 Olympic Games, Tom continued to train and compete. But it was in 2013 that he made a life-changing announcement on YouTube. In the video, Tom came out, announcing he was in a relationship with a man and “couldn’t be happier.”

We now know that the man Tom mentioned in the video was Dustin Lance Black, Oscar Award-Winning writer of the infamous 2008 film Milk. Meeting at a party in early 2013, the couple has, for the most part, been together ever since. In 2015 Tom and Lance got engaged. They were married earlier this year.

But let’s rewind a bit, back to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Tom Daley once again drew the world’s attention. Competing for Team Great Britain, he won Bronze with diving partner Daniel Goodfellow in the 10m mens’ platform synchro competition.

Although he failed to place in the individual 10m platform at Rio, Tom continues to compete; winning multiple medals this year in the 2017 FINA World Series.

As blindingly gorgeous as ever, Tom not only has looks on his side. After all, confidence and a pride in one’s self is extremely attractive as well. Together with his husband Lance, the duo work hard to further the cause of LGBT equality. The couple were jointly awarded the ‘Independent Influencer Award’ at the 2017 British LGBT Awards.

As we mentioned earlier, Tom married his long-time partner Dustin Lance Black earlier this year at Bovey Castle in Devon, England. The location is only a short distance to Plymouth, Tom’s childhood home.

“When all my hopes and dreams of “Maybe one day…” came true. Thanks to all of our family and friends for helping create the best day of our lives,” Tom wrote on Instagram while sharing his wedding photos.

‘A Song of Water and Fire’ continues with the fire, KJ Apa. The 20 year-old actor from New Zealand rose to international fame with his role as Archie in Riverdale, The CW’s modern spin on the world of Archie Comics. Even though KJ doesn’t have naturally red hair, he certainly brings the fire regardless.

“Archie got hot,” a line from Kevin, a gay character in show, is quite an understatement. In casting KJ as Archie, the show certainly went another direction compared to the awkward, freckled character from the comics. But it works, and it works well.

KJ, whose full name is Keneti James Fitzgerald Apa, is not only an actor, but an avid music fan and artist. He plays both the guitar and piano. The guitar seems to be his main interest. Just like his character on Riverdale, KJ is passionate about music, frequently posting videos of himself playing the guitar on Instagram.

In 2012, at the age of 14, KJ released a solo instrumental album, The Third Room.

“Being bought up in a Christian home, I am aware of God’s presence and speak to Him through my music. I thank God for my talent and know for certain that I wouldn’t be who I am now and where I need to be, if it wasn’t for Him,” KJ said in the album’s notes.

KJ’s faith seems to still play an important part in his life.

If you follow KJ at all on social media, you’ve probably come across the term ‘daddy’ quite a bit. Most of us probably wouldn’t associate the term with KJ, but according to him, he really wants to earn the ‘daddy’ label.

“Ha! I started that actually,” KJ told TooFab during an interview. “It started as a personal joke between Camila [Mendes] and I because all of the girls on the show are obsessed with older men, ‘Daddies.’ And I realized you can only be a ‘Daddy’ once you’re like 26, have a beard and kinda rugged and I’m literally not that so I’m trying to earn it from the girls and gain that title since the new goal in life is to be called ‘Daddy.'”

We’re pretty sure KJ was misinformed about the meaning of the word, but if he wants to be called ‘daddy,’ who are we to stand in his way?

Even though KJ identifies as straight, he certainly knows how to appeal to his multitude of gay fans. KJ may not have started the ‘daddy’ trend to specifically appeal to his queer following, but we’re pretty sure he’s caught on by now.

The first season of Riverdale came to a close a few months ago, but filming has already begun for Season 2. KJ posted a teaser photo on Instagram, and we can’t wait.

As our story of ‘A Song of Water and Fire’ comes to a close, we hope you enjoyed the journey.

If this were a true Game of Thrones story, Tom Daley and KJ Apa would be battling it out for the top spot. But in this tale, there’s no Iron Throne, and there’s no winner. It’s not a competition. Each young man is unique and beautiful in his own right.

We at Out ‘n Proud may be slightly partial to Tom, but that doesn’t mean new-comer KJ is without appeal. We look forward to seeing where the lives, and professional careers, of both men take them. We’re certain to be along for the ride.

Before we go, we’ll leave you with another special treat. What GoT-esque story would be complete without the original heart-throb from Westeros: Kit Harington.
